Coutts Bank Commission

I was recently commissioned by the CEO of Coutts Bank to paint this triptych. The CEO asked me to capture the beauty of the rooftop gardens, the 80,000 bees that inhabit the roof and the surrounding cityscape.
The painting on the left depicts the view of the roof-top gardens of St Martin-in-the Fields and Nelson's Column, the middle painting encapsulates the picturesque walkway along the rooftop gardens and the final painting on the right shows the view along the Strand towards Trafalgar Square. The gardens are beautiful to walk through, a cacophony of beautiful plants and flowers, smells and sounds of the bees and the surrounding city life down below. The bees are so very much part of the Coutts history. Angela Burdett-Coutts believed that “Life, whether in man or beast, is sacred” and she wanted to encourage beekeepers and protect bee populations; she even became President of the British Beekeeping Society. Angela’s love of wildlife is perhaps why she incorporated a tiny illustrated bee into her personal letterhead– thus spelling her initials, “A Bee C".
I share this belief with Angela too and I wanted to convey the importance of the bees and their fragility in our ever increasingly urban world and the concept that we can with projects such as these fantastic roof-top gardens encourage bees and their future on this planet could potentially be more hopeful. Even though we progress forward at such enormous speed we must take care of our history and all 'bee'ings!
